Slava Ukraini–To The Front
Russia invaded Ukraine for the second time on February 24th, 2022, causing a massive humanitarian catastrophe that displaced millions. The world assumed that it would take 'days' for Russia to take the capital city of Kyiv, but the Armed Forces of Ukraine proved far superior and more intelligent in their strategy, despite being a smaller force. They eventually forced Russia to retreat from the outskirts of Kyiv after heavy losses, focusing their efforts on the Eastern and Southern regions of the country. Many of the people who stayed in their villages just outside the city were later found with their hands bound behind their back and shot in the head. Many showed signs of torture and rape.
Despite the barbarism of the Russian troops, the Ukrainians continue to persevere in a battle to define their future.
'Slava Ukraini' is a three-part photo essay made by Gavin Doran in late February and early March of 2022 in Ukraine during the height of the war.
